Sunshine Coast Thunder is a semi-professional netball program based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, and plays a key role in the state’s elite athlete pathway. Competing in Netball Queensland’s Sapphire Series (top tier) and Ruby Series (development tier), Thunder provides a structured environment for emerging players to progress toward national-level competition. It acts as a vital bridge between grassroots netball and professional leagues such as Suncorp Super Netball.
The program represents a large regional catchment, stretching from Caboolture to Rockhampton, allowing talented athletes from outside major cities to access high-performance opportunities without relocating early. Thunder is closely aligned with the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), using its facilities and sports science support to enhance athlete development.
Importantly, Thunder has a strong connection with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, serving as a feeder team and preparing players for potential selection into elite national squads. Athletes benefit from advanced coaching, strength and conditioning programs, and exposure to high-level competition.
Overall, Sunshine Coast Thunder is a crucial part of Queensland’s netball ecosystem, helping identify, develop, and transition regional talent into professional pathways while strengthening the sport across the Sunshine Coast and beyond.
