That’s right — it’s back for another year! SEAFM’s Build-A-Boat Regatta is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic and hilariously chaotic community events… and this year, it’s bigger than ever!
Teams will the race along shores of Golden Beach to see which boat will take out the title for 2025, with a $2,000 major prize plus $500 in other prizes!
So grab your empty water containers, blow up mattresses and milk bottles and start building! We have even given you some helpful hints below.
Team registrations are open until 17th October (Note: we will contact you after you register with an Info Pack and to collect more details about your crew).

What Can You Build?
The best part of the Build-A-Boat Regatta is that anyone can do it — no shipyard required! Past crews have floated (and sometimes sunk) in creations made from pallets, milk bottles, plastic drums and even old mattresses.
Here are some easy ideas:
- Foam + Tape Boats – cheap, light and fun. Just layer the foam, tape every seam, and cross your fingers!
- Bottle & Barrel Rafts – tie empty bottles, containers or pool noodles under a frame for instant buoyancy.
- Plywood Canoes or Rowboats – for the handy types, a few sheets of timber and waterproof sealant go a long way.
- Anything Weird & Wonderful – as long as it floats, it’s fair game.
Quick Tips:
- Keep your weight low and centered
- Seal everything to slow leaks
- Don’t overload with heavy decorations
- Test your masterpiece in shallow water first
Remember — style points count, but staying afloat counts more!
