The Real Reason Jess & Norm Want To Win
“Game on!” Norm said as the Blockheads prepared for the final walkarounds from Alice Stolz from Domain, Scott Cam and Shelley Craft. He and Jess were only half a point behind Bianca and Carla to take out the Domain magazine cover – something that has been legendary for showcasing the apartment that goes on to win the whole thing come Auction Day. In fact, it’s predicted the last three winners.
The girls were equally as focused. “We know it comes down to the two penthouses competing for each other [today],” she said, of their luxurious outdoor areas. “We want the win so much and we think we deserve it.”
Like the girls, Jess and Norm wanted to win but their reason was also related to a bigger picture. Jess was keenly aware of the link between a Domain cover and a Block series win, and for her and Norm scoring that winning cash would financially set them up to be able to have another child.
“Alice walking around is not just, “Oh, we want to win The Block,”” she explained. “It’s whether or not we get another little human being into our little tribe.”
Kerrie and Spence’s space was a welcome cosy and comfortable retreat from the storms outside. The team felt it was a lush, private and a green space but Kerrie and Spence knew even with that positive feedback, they weren’t in with a chance to win the cover.
Hans and Courtney had the world’s tightest budget for their indoor terrace but enthusiastically described it as a “jungle”. “It’s going to be a modern conservatory,” Hans said happily.
Hayden and Sara have been confidently declaring they can beat the mighty penthouses in a David and Goliath style battle and it was time to try and convince Alice of that fact as well – and she was definitely impressed by their plans and custom built BBQ.
“I’m cooked,” Jess said, as Alice, Scotty and Shelley headed to her terrace. Knowing what was riding on a win, her stress levels were immense as she and the team raced to prep the area. With their budget at rock bottom, Jess and Norm have scrimped and saved harder than ever. Despite selling off unwanted items to raise essential cash, the pair had to cut back their outdoor plans and even cancel tradesmen by the hour to stay within their limited budget.
That included her best mate. Watching him and another tradesman push a planter into place, Jess thanked them for their hard work and then broke the news that they had to wrap up. “We can’t afford you,” she said, bursting into tears. “I am so sorry to knock you off early.”
It was hugs all around as a devastated Jess tried to rally. Norm sportively told her their space was amazing as it stood and he wanted her to enjoy the day. “It’s gonna be all good hon,” he said.
And that it was. With a lavish spread laid out for their guests and smiling faces greeting them, Norm and Jess blew the trio away. Alice was blissfully unaware of Jess and Norm’s desire to win and have another bub. “I look at Alice and think, “You potentially have the difference between giving us a little baby or not,” revealed Jess. “Poor Alice, she’s like the real estate stork!”
As the judges sipped on their wine glasses, Jess explained the pair had mixed luxurious touches like marble with budget finds, like outdoor chairs for five dollars apiece.
The group were particularly impressed by the pet-friendly zone Jess and Norm had thoughtfully included. “Very clever,” Shelley said as Alice added she was completely wowed.
The girls were so focused on the Domain walk around they admitted they were treating the visit like a proper room reveal. “This is our last ditch at being cover girls!” said Carla.
The storm was about to well and truly smash the Block as the trio finally made their way to visit them. “Welcome to our oasis!” said Bianca happily. Minus the sun, of course.
The rain lashed the outdoor space as a freezing Alice peeked around at their huge entertaining zone, bar and fireplace.
Finally, it was time for the big reveal – who will win today’s Domain walk around and the cover of the Domain magazine? As Alice declared Jess and Norm the winners, the pair were highly emotional. Knowing just how much it meant to them, Jess immediately burst into tears.
Everyone looked slightly stunned as the usually bubbly Jess sobbed at the realization they had won more cash to put towards their terrace and the all-important cover.
And of course, the biggest win of all – they’re one step closer to that visit from the stork.
