Set a Safe Pace around Schools

School Zone speed limits are being enforced right around the Sunshine Coast.

Along with Battery World, 91.9 SEA FM wants to remind drivers to stay focused, slow down and drive slowly through School Zones and look out for our kids.

Speed limits in school zones

School zones are installed to reduce traffic speed near schools during the times indicated in the school zone sign. School zones are identified by signs which are displayed on both approaches to the school and show the speed limit and the times during which it applies.

School zones are generally permitted on roads adjacent to schools where there is significant school related activity on and beside the road.

Speed limits which apply include:

  • 40km/h on roads where the existing limit is 50km/h, 60km/h or 70km/h
  • 60km/h on roads where the existing limit is 80km/h
  • 60km/h or 80km/h on roads where the speed limit is 90km/h or 100km/h, depending on the amount of school related activity on or near the road
  • 80km/h on roads where the existing limit is 110km/h.

Standardised school zone times

School zone times have been standardised in Queensland to help motorists remember when to slow down.

The standard operating times for most school zones* in Queensland is 7–9am and 2–4pm.

All-day school zones

Most all-day school zones operate between 7am–4pm and have been installed at some split-campus schools to help protect children who cross the road during the day to travel to classes. In regional areas, all-day school zones may operate at different times to match up with the standardised times for that council (e.g. Gympie Regional Council has an all-day school zone that operates from 7.30am–4pm).
